The Smith river was a little on the high side when we started out this morning with about a foot of visiblity. It didn't rain much overnight and we were hoping to catch the river on the downswing, but mother nature had a different plan. After putting in and drifting for a couple of hours, the downpour started and the river rose dramatically, going from 11.5 ft. to 13.5 ft. With no takedowns and hardly any signs of fish moving up, we decided to make a short day of it and head south to check out the Eel River. After a few phone calls to check the weather, we finally put the boat in on the lower Eel at 2:30 p.m. We drifted a few holes and ended up with 4 salmon and 1 steelhead landed. Looks like a few fish are holding in the lower Eel and with the next rain they should be on the move again. I'll be on the Smith again on Wednesday, and still have a few dates open if you want to catch some Smith Kings. Fish On! Patrick-
