This past week I've been fishing the rivers in and around Humboldt County with good success. We've hooked and landed some nice fish, although the weekend was a whole lot tougher due to the increase in boat traffic. With the Smith and Chetco not fishing well, it seems everyone one is down South. The weatherman is calling for rain off and on for the rest of the week, so we'll see how that affects the Humboldt rivers. If we don't get a lot of rain and the rivers don't blow out, the fishing should continue to be good.

Well after a week on the southern rivers, the rain has returned and put an end to some fantastic steelhead action. The rivers are all blown out and won't be fishable for some time. I headed up north to fish the Smith this past weekend and the results were far from spectacular. There just isn't a lot of fish in the river, period. Most of the boats were getting 0 to 1 fish. Rain is in the forecast for most of the week, which will hopefully bring some fresh fish into both the Smith and Chetco. I have several openings in the coming weeks if you're looking to get into what should be prime time for Steelhead, so give me a call.

This weekend I fished the South Fork of the Eel down near Redway. The river was fishable, but hadn't yet turned that nice shade of green and had only about a foot and a half of visibility. There were quite a few boats on our run, a clear sign that rain is needed up north. We fished both bait and plugs with equal results. On Saturday we went 1 for 2, landing a thick 12 lb. chromer that put up an amazing fight. Sunday we were 2 for 3, with a bunch of missed opportunities. The South Fork should continue to produce fish as it clears this week, although rain is in the forecast for Thursday and Friday.
I'll be fishing the Smith Friday through Sunday and I'm hoping for rain. Conditions have been tough as the river is clear and there just doesn't seem to be many fish in the system.
I still have open dates throughout the steelhead season, so give me a call.

Since my last report, we've had quite a few unfishable days. The Smith is now in great shape and should start to give up some big numbers as we're in for a good week of weather. Today the water looked ideal, a nice emerald green color with about 3 ft. of visibility. I thought we had some really good drifts for most of the day, but for whatever reason, they just wouldn't take our bait. It was one of those days. Although overall scores weren't that high, some guides reported up to 3 fish landed, but the average for most boats was 0 to 1 fish.
The Southern rivers should all be fishable by this weekend, so nows the time to book your trip before the next rain.

Looks like we're finally getting a break in the weather. The Smith should fish today after being a plunk-only show for the past few days and next week the fishing should be red hot for both the Smith and the Checto. All the Southern rivers are out until at least the end of next week and maybe longer depending on the next rain. I'll be back on the Smith on Sunday and I have dates open in the coming weeks. If your interested, give me a call. Now's the time to book the trip of a lifetime!

This past Sunday I fished with a father and son team up from Santa Rosa. The river was in good shape as the rain never materialized like the weatherman predicted. The morning started out slow, we didn't have a bite all morning. But my guys were gung ho and on the second drift we finally hooked up. The first fish we hooked was small, so he was quickly landed and released. The second fish was a dandy, a 15lb buck which gave us all we could handle. We ended the day 2 for 2, which seemed to be inline with the other boats. The Smith had been fishable up until Friday, but the heavy rains finally blew it out. It peaked at 15 ft on the upper gauge this evening, but with more rain predicted for the next few days, it may not be fishable until early next week. I'll put up a report as soon as I get back on the water. Fish On! Patrick- |

Even with all the rain that pounded the Northcoast this past week, the Smith came back into shape on Friday. The river was at 12 ft. on the lower gauge at the end of the day, so Saturday the river should've been just about perfect. I had 2 locals in my boat on Saturday and when we put in, the river was at 11 ft. and on a slight decline. Within minutes after putting in, we hooked and landed a beautiful 18 lb. buck and saw several more fish roll in front of us. I thought we may be in for a fantastic day. We landed our second fish at Douglas park, a chrome 9 lb. wild hen that we photographed and released. Then the rains came and we managed only one more hook-up. In talking to some of the other guides on the river, 2-3 fish seemed to be the norm for the day. Sunday was a different story. I fished with a single and it was all we could do to get a couple bites. It sounded like it was a tough day for everyone on the river. I still have open days through the end of the year and many throughout the steelhead season, so give me a call and let's go fishing. Well the rain has finally tapered off here on the Northcoast and while the Humboldt rivers are all blown out, the Smith should be driftable by Friday. It peaked at 23 ft. on the lower gauge today and is dropping back into shape quickly. The forecast calls for dry weather on Friday, but chances of showers on Saturday and Sunday, so the Smith should be primed for the weekend. It's been giving up some real nice steelhead for this early in the season, and it's only going to get better. I heard reports of a few 20 pounders landed this past week. I still have some open dates in January, so call me and let's go fishing.

After hearing reports of 20-30 fish days, we decided to fish the upper section of the Trinity River today. As luck would have it, it was the coldest day of the year. It was a bone-chilling 28 degrees when we put in and the only thing that was going to keep us warm was fighting fish. Well, it didn't take long. We boated our first steelhead of the day and hooked another not far from where we put in. We only had 2 other chances the rest of the day, but we did end up 2 for 4, which wasn't bad considering the low water conditions. In talking to some of the other fisherman on our drift, it didn't sound like anybody was really catching fish in big numbers. If you were the first to the hole, you had a good chance of hooking up, if not, you just kept rowing to the next one. That boat traffic wasn't as bad as we had heard either. There was just 1 other drift boat and 3 pontoons on our drift. That was probably the last drift of the year on the Trinity for me as I'll focus now on the Smith and the southern rivers, when they are fishable. With the last storm, the Smith got it's first big push of steelhead in the river. Call me and let's go fishing. FISH ON! Patrick- |

The fishing has been real slow the past couple weeks, with guides having to work extra hard for a couple bites a day. It sounds like the kings have moved on up through the Smith and with the latest storms, the winter steelhead are starting to show. It rained pretty hard here most of the day but the forecast is for the rain to taper off through the weekend. Both the Smith and the Chetco should be in good shape. The Mad, Eel, and Klamath are probably blown out and won't fish until late next week at the earliest. Call me if you want to book a trip for the upcoming winter steelhead runs on the Smith, Chetco, and coastal rivers. Fish On! Patrick- |
